Set Smaller Goals To Reach Larger Goals

I want to make a million dollars!  I want to lose 100 pounds!  I want to have a successful business of my own and quit my job!  I want to make 50 sales this month!

Do these statements look familiar to you?  Maybe you have one or two of them on your list of goals. All too often, when someone starts setting goals for themselves, they come up with a list like this. In and of itself, there is no problem with having big goals. I have big goals as I’m sure you do. The problem often comes when we have a really big goal, but no smaller goals to get there.

Have you ever seen the movie “What About Bob?” with Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss?  (If you haven’t, go rent it or something, its hilarious!)  In this movie is mentioned “Baby Steps.”  I know that we all have heard the term before when applied to accomplishing larger things in life, but I want to come back to it for a few minutes here and apply it to your goals.

Once you have established a large goal for yourself, then try to come up with some of the baby step type of goals to reach that larger goal. For example, if you wanted to lose 100 pounds, write a list of smaller goals down that you think will help you to achieve the larger goal. Maybe change your diet, drink less soda, walk or workout a few times per week. These are all smaller goals to set to help you achieve the “biggie.”

In the last paragraph, I mentioned to write down smaller goals that you think will help you to achieve the larger goal. Whether all of your ideas will be good ones or not, just start writing that list. In fact, write down as many baby step type goals as you can think of. Some of them might be fruitcake ideas, but some of them will probably work really well in your situation.  Just start writing that list.

Take as much time as you need to write your list. If it takes you two weeks to do it, then that’s fine. Ideally, you want it to be as large as possible. After you are finished with your list, go through it and determine what smaller goals you can start to accomplish right now that will work toward achieving the big goal. Its ok if some of your ideas don’t pan out right away. The point is to take action NOW on your baby step list.

Its alright with me if you think it’s a little silly with the terminology, but these type of techniques work for accomplishing your long term, larger goals. The worst thing to do is to write your big goal and then do nothing about it. To not work toward it because you don’t know how or it is just to big to accomplish without hitting other milestones first.

By having your list of smaller goals, it will start to motivate you when those are accomplished and it will get your creative juices flowing to think of more possibilities for accomplishing the big goals. I hope this little article helps you to find different and creative ways to achieving your own large goals.

2 Ways To Develop More Creativity

Would you like to have more creativity in your life? A sense of being able to figure out how to get things done in a way that might have others take notice? There is a simple way to accomplish this. I say simple, but it does require some training on your part. Don’t worry, you won’t have to sit in a classroom or hear some lecture. Here are two tips on developing more creativity in your life.

To have more creativity, follow this two-step plan:

1. Encourage creativity.

2. Train your brain to be more creative.

If you were to start on both of these right now, it is likely that you can begin experiencing  greater creativity today.

Encourage Creativity

By encouraging your creativity you will increase your creativity. Of course, this is true of most things you want to see more of in your life. Encouragement can work wonders, but how do you encourage creativity?

Start by paying attention to it. Our subconscious minds tend to give us more of what we pay attention to. Ignore the creative aspects of your life, and you are telling your subconscious that they are unimportant. Consciously note when you’re feeling creative, and your subconscious mind will start feeding you more creative ideas. Just look for it and you’ll find more of it.

You can encourage creativity by writing your ideas down. Start keeping an “idea journal.” Do this regularly, and you’ll notice that you often start having more ideas the moment you start to write. A so-so idea may normally be forgotten, but by writing it down, you may remember it. Then your subconscious can work on it, and may transform into something very creative.

For more creativity in your life, start putting creative ideas into practice. If you paint, paint something totally different from your usual subjects. If you sell houses, try a new approach. Even just driving a different route to work to see if it is quicker can encourage your creativity. The point is to get your mind working outside of its regular patterns.

Changing your surroundings can encourage creativity. For more creativity in your love life, go hike up a mountain with your partner. If you write, try sitting on a roof to write. For new ideas for your business, take a notebook to the park and sit by the duck pond. Any change of environment can get your brain out of its ruts.

Train Your Brain To Be More Creative

To dramatically increase your creativity, develop creative habits of mind. If you watch a good comedian, you’ll see that they have trained their mind to look for the “different angle” on everyday things. Why not train your mind to do the same?

Start challenging assumptions, for example, until it becomes a habit. If you’re looking for ways to get more customers, stop and say, “Do I really need more customers?” It’s a question that suggests other creative solutions, like finding ways to make more money off existing customers, or ways to cut expenses. It could lead to more profitable ideas. Challenging assumptions is a great way to have more creativity in your problem solving.

While driving to work, randomly choose anything you see and ask what it can teach you about whatever problem you are working on. A helicopter might make you think about a way to track where the car goes when you loan it to your kids. Palm trees may lead to a new design for patio umbrellas.

These two techniques are called “Assumption Challenging” and “Random Presentation,” and are classic creative problem solving techniques. There are dozens more. If you train your brain to habitually use these or other techniques, and provide it with a little encouragement, you really can have more creativity.

3 More Motivational Tips

Here are some tips to keep your motivation up and to help you on your journey to success. If you are an entrepreneur, you know that your success cannot depend on the opinions of others. Like the wind and the weather, opinions change frequently. To succeed at any endeavor, you must stay the course…no matter what the cost!

1. Avoid Negativity. Negative people are all around us. They can include our loved ones as well as a dear friend. Most often, it is the opinions of total strangers that breed the most negativity as if someone who doesn’t know or understand you is able to voice a reasonably thought out opinion about you.

No, you shouldn’t avoid those who are close to you, rather there are areas of conversation that are less profitable. Accept criticism constructively, but steer the conversation away from nonstop negative banter. Negativity will grow on you unless you take control.

2. Build Yourself Up. No, I do not mean for you to puff yourself up with pride, rather you can be your best source of encouragement by encouraging yourself.  How can you do this? Read the testimonies and life stories of other entrepreneurs and people who have succeeded in your area of business that have gone before you. You can find current day success stories of people who have gone from “rags to riches” or from simple means to great influence.

3. Go Back to Square One. Should you find yourself wavering, recall those things that encouraged you to take your “step of faith” in the first place. Recall what it takes to succeed: discipline, self confidence, independence, hard work, sacrifice, etc. Look forward to the anticipated results: a good income, independence, a job you love, etc. Finally, remember the worst job you ever worked…imagine yourself working there again. Blah! Use whatever it takes to motivate you.

So, toss off the negative thoughts and embrace that which is uplifting, inspiring, encouraging, warm, friendly, and helpful. You are on track to achieving great things as long as you do not let yourself become derailed by the negative words of others.

Do You Have A Fear Of Success?

Many people that fail to achieve their goals could be able to attribute it to a fear of failure. No one wants to fail, but there it is, many people suffer from a fear of failure. Did you know that there is also a state known as the fear of success? Fear of success is harder to see than a fear of failure and it can be more difficult to overcome.

Let me ask you a few questions about your life. Be honest with yourself. Do you study and try to implement personal development tools, but your life does not improve or even get worse?  Do you settle for less that you feel you deserve or are capable of achieving? Are you full of enthusiasm and optimism when you start new projects, but never really finish them.  Do you ever expect things to go wrong no matter how good things are right now?

Do any of those questions resonate with you? Do you see any of those patterns in your life?

The fear of success can hold you back in many ways. There are also symptoms of the fear of success. Take a look below and see if you can identify any of these symptoms. Below each of these symptoms is a solution for you.

One of the biggest success killers is procrastination. This is putting off what needs doing or just not doing it even though it will bring you closer to your goals. We have all suffered from this at some time or other in our lives. Although some of us more than others. (Hint, I am looking in the mirror.)

How do you expect to reach your destination of you do not takes steps toward it? The answer is to do the little things each day that bring you just a little closer to your goal. This is why having a goal plan is so important. The point is to take action! Any action! It is ok if you have rethink the steps along the way as long as your not sitting and doing nothing. Taking action is a monster aspect of personal development.

Have you ever heard the saying, “can’t see the forest for the trees?”  This is kind of the opposite of procrastination. It can be just as bad for you though.

What I am trying to tell you is that you should not get caught up in your plan so heavily that your plan becomes more important than materializing your goal. Your plan is important but keep in mind that you have a goal for a reason, not just to work a plan. Be flexible with your plan, maybe half way through, you realize that there is a better way of doing something. Let go of your ego and change your plan, be flexible.

Another symptom of the fear of success is the thinking that the time is not right. Have you waited until the perfect timing to start your venture or until you had more information or a better plan?

This is starting to sound a little like a broken record, but action is the key. Take action! Take small steps in the beginning. These small steps are better than sitting around waiting for the time to be better or until you know more.

This is a good start for you to think about for right now. I urge you to think about whether or not these issues are holding you back. The big answer is to just take action. Do not forget to enjoy the journey, though. Eventually your fear of success will go away and you will have moved a long way toward achievement and success.

Creating A Plan Of Action For Your Goals

To be sure, many of you have set goals before. Many of you have failed to achieve those goals. There may be a reason why those goals went unachieved. It might be that you did not have a specific plan of action to accomplish your goals.

Setting a goal is only half of the process. The other half is much more important in my view. The other half of the goal setting process is to create the plan for achieving that goal. Please do not overlook this all important step!

Now I don’t know you, but chances are that if you just set a random goal, it will probably not be achieved. Why is this? Let’s say that you want to go somewhere that you have never been to. You know what the destination is but now you need the map. The map is your plan for attaining your goal!

Creating your plan is very simple. After you have written your goal down, break it into smaller chunks. Call these smaller chunks goals themselves, if you wish. These are scheduled activities that you will do over a period of time. It can be days, weeks or even years, depending on the goal.

It is alright if your goal plan is not perfect at this point. Sometimes we do not know every step of the way and we have to figure out our plan as we go. That is perfectly alright. Just write down what you do know you need to get done. It may be vague, it may be incomplete. Your plan should be flexible and you will be updating it as you go. Each task completed will move you closer to completing your primary goal.

Basically, your goal should just be a series of steps. These are the things you need to get done in order for you to accomplish your goal. It is like cooking a nice dish, say lasagna. The goal is to make it, but the ingredients and what you do with those ingredients are your plan.

Creating a goal plan is frequently overlooked, and many people discipline themselves to write their goals every day but create no plan! So make sure you take the time to decide where you want to go (your goals) and then create a plan that will tell you how to get there!

Many of us have more than one goal we would like to achieve. Sit down and really think of a goal plan for each one. Start doing the little tasks that you have written down and soon you will be accomplishing your goals and therefore achieving your dreams!

4 Ways To Fire Up Motivation

It can be very hard to stay motivated when you experience failure. Sometimes it can be hard to move forward with your plans when it seems like nothing happens but failure after failure, doesn’t it? There are times when you just want to give up because you are not seeing any real results from your efforts and the work you’ve put in.

But, wait a minute!

You have a dream right? A goal you wish to accomplish, a project to complete? Whatever it is, do not quit. Never give up. You have heard the saying “winners never quit and quitters never win.” Take all the negative thoughts and words out of your mental dictionary and focus on your solutions. Instill a sense of conviction and show some tenacity. The battle is not lost unless you give in.

There are times, though, when you are exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. Lets go over some motivational tips to get you achieving your dreams and feeling that sense of accomplishment that you so desire.

1) Get An Overwhelming Feeling Of Achieving What You Want To Accomplish

Close your eyes and think about how you will feel after accomplishing your mission. You would feel ecstatic, wouldn’t you? You might even feel the need to shed some tears of joy! Just let the feeling sink in. Remember it, because there will be times when you need it.

Never forget how you will feel when accomplishing your goals. Use this feeling for motivation to keep going with your current situation. Whether that situation is good, bad or ugly, this can be a great motivational technique.

2) The Reward System

This one is pretty obvious. Have you ever entered a contest and there were no prizes for the winners? What would be the point. Yes, a little competition and maybe some bragging rights. Overall, though, its not very encouraging.

The point is to reward yourself after accomplishing certain goals. Set different incentives for each objective. Also, make them better and better incentives, the further along you get into your project. Maybe the rewards are small in the beginning, but gradually get larger and larger as you go.

Another thing you can do with this principle is to set it up before you even begin working toward your particular goal. This way, you have a road map of sorts, to accomplishing the larger picture. And you get rewarded along the way!

3) Associate With The Right People

If you want to accomplish your goals, try to surround yourself with the types of people that will encourage and support you. Being with and around these people can have a tremendous effect on how you work and view things in general.

There is a flip side to this equation, though. We have all been around the negative people in our lives. They are everywhere. It’s almost like they want to see you fail and try to encourage it by being negative.

This can also cause a powerful reaction within you. If it can get you mad enough, it can get you determined enough to achieve those goals! Do it just to prove them wrong.  Let them eat their words! Let it fire you up and help you achieve it, but don’t turn into one of them yourself. Always be positive, use those emotions, but for the right reasons. Continue to focus on your objectives and not on revenge.

4) Take Care Of Your Health

This is and should be something that you always strive to do. There are books about taking care of your health, but lets look at a few quick points.

Try to get some exercise every day. Go for a walk or just do something to get more oxygen into your brain. It will give you more energy to achieve.

Eat healthy. Stop with the sugars and the junk food. Eat an apple or a banana for a snack. It will help keep you invigorated throughout the day.

Get enough rest. You won’t be able to think as well if you’re tired all the time. You will be more focused and better able to handle the day if you get enough rest. However, if you do not, you are more likely to get frustrated more easily and become like one of the negative people we talked about earlier.
